متن کاملStrategies for Intracellular Survival of Burkholderia pseudomallei
Burkholderia pseudomallei is the causative agent of melioidosis, a disease with high mortality that is prevalent in tropical regions of the world. A key component of the pathogenesis of melioidosis is the ability of B. pseudomallei to enter, survive, and replicate within mammalian host cells. For non-phagocytic cells, bacterial adhesins have been identified both on the bacterial surface and ass...
متن کاملBurkholderia pseudomallei modulates host iron homeostasis to facilitate iron availability and intracellular survival
BACKGROUND The control over iron homeostasis is critical in host-pathogen-interaction. Iron plays not only multiple roles for bacterial growth and pathogenicity, but also for modulation of innate immune responses. Hepcidin is a key regulator of host iron metabolism triggering degradation of the iron exporter ferroportin. Although iron overload in humans is known to increase susceptibility to Bu...
متن کاملBurkholderia pseudomallei Misidentified by Automated System
After returning from Thailand, a 35-year-old man from Switzerland was hospitalized with an abscess of the head. Material cultured from the abscess and adjacent bone grew a gram-negative rod, which was misidentified by an automated microbiology system as Burkholderia cepacia. The organism was eventually identified by molecular methods as B. pseudomallei.
متن کاملFatal Burkholderia pseudomallei septicaemia.
Melioidosis, the infection caused by the saprophytic bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, is endemic in south-east Asia and northern Australia [1]. Sporadic cases have been reported from the Indian subcontinent and it is an emerging infection in India [2]. A low prevalence of antibodies against melioidosis among hospitalassociated groups in Colombo had been reported in 1976 [3], as well as a re...
